"Cartoonism" |
|---|
I drew this image out the night before my first public exhibit, in November of 2002. I had fourteen pieces complete and ready for exhibition, but it seemed like I was missing something. My pictorial pyramid lacked a capstone. This title piece would require the incorporation of all the elements present in my works: things like checkerboards, teeth, tongues, and fingers. In the past, I had described my works as "psychedelic 2-D pop art", or "psychedelic and cartoony", but those descriptions were too long. I was searching for a term that was short yet could communicate the basic premise of my artistic style effectively. Another way I would describe my works was by comparing them to other artists. For example, "My artwork is like a cross between Dr. Seuss and Salvador Dali." This was pretty effective, but I didn't like referring to the works of other artists while attempting to describe my own. I began thinking about all the past movements in art (as well as in religion), and their superfluous usage of terms ending in the suffix, "ism". It was this line of thought yielded "cartoonism", and I decided that this was the descriptive term I had been looking for. Ryan Thies © 2004-2007
